Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Lou Gehrigs Disease (a longer version), is a progressive and life-limiting neurological condition that affects the motor neurons — the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. Over time, these neurons degenerate and die, leading to muscle weakness, loss of mobility, and eventually, the inability to speak, swallow, and breathe.
Each day in Australia, two people are diagnosed with MND and two people lose their lives to it. While the condition can affect anyone, most diagnoses occur between the ages of 50 and 70. There is currently no known cure, but research continues to offer new hope for treatments that can slow its progression and improve quality of life.
